My Father’s side of the family is from Scotland, Ireland and England and my Mother’s side is from Scotland and Ireland. Following is a history of the Oliver side from the male perspective:
The Oliver family was made up of farmers, merchants and warriors. By merchants I mean my forefathers worked for someone, principally in commodities, buying or selling. Some of the Olivers were bankers but never were anyone who owned a bank, never employers but always employees.
Before coming to America my Oliver relatives lived in London. Life was dismal and dreary as a shop keeper, always being overseen by the shop Owner. My family longed to break free and start out on their own – to break free of the system of intolerable wages, religious persecution and small and cramped living conditions.
Finally, an Oliver made the decision to head out to the New Colony of America. They believed that at best they could get free land and start a farm or a ranch. And at worse they would fall back on their shop keeping knowledge and work for someone else. When the Oliver family landed it was at the Virginia Colony during the 1600's. From there they moved to North Carolina and lived along the coastal and river region. My Father's Great-Great-Great-Great, Great Grandfather Alexander Oliver was born prior to 1702 in Chowan County in North Carolina near the Albemarle Sound River. So you can see the time frame and geography. Chowan was named for the Chowan Indian tribe, which lived in the northeastern part of this Carolina Colony.
Dr. Martin W. Oliver Jr., is a son of the American Revolution. On both his Father and Mothers side his family members have fought in The American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the American Civil War, WWI, WW2 and the Vietnam War.
When the Oliver’s got to America they were overwhelmed with the beauty and size of the land. Never before had they seen so much space and natural resources. This new land was unlike crowded England with its dreary cobblestone streets, its soot and ash and its cold winters and overcast dreary days. For some time the Oliver’s stayed on the coastal cities of the Eastern seaboard until they gradually made their way to the quiet and peaceful areas of Kentucky and Tennessee.
Prior to England which is where my relatives lived for about 200 years, my family resided in Normandy France and were originally farmers until they became soldiers, joined the military and were part of the invading force which entered England and settled there. The Oliver ancestors are from the Biblical blood line of Japheth, one of the 3 sons of Noah, (Shem, Ham, and Japheth). Japheth migrated with his family to Europe after the Great Flood. Originally Shem, Ham, and Japheth were from the Middle East.
As farmers my relatives cultivated many types of fruits and vegetables; never as a land owner but always as a worker. The name Oliver signifies that my ancestors originally tended the olive groves and were responsible for the harvesting of olives and the pressing of olives to make olive oil. The name Oliver means one who tends the olives and one who presses the olive oil from the olive. The Oliver would literally carry in his hands the sacred oil for the anointing.
In Israel, God established that only olive oil was to be used in the Temple for the anointing ceremony. Being covered or anointed by oil, olive-oil, was a typology or symbol of being anointed by The Holy Spirit of God.
The name Martin means warrior. Woodrow means one who stands tall as a tree. Oliver is one who carries the sacred oil of the anointing of The Holy Spirit of God.
This Oliver family genealogy is documented and was also given and spoken to Dr. Martin Woodrow Oliver Jr., personally by God The Holy Spirit while in sacred prayer on 12/01/2001. “He should know He was there personally!”
Dr. Martin W. Oliver Jr's heritage on his Mother's side (Eleanor Annette Hurt-Oliver-Clabaugh) who is of Scottish and Irish linage and a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, Earl of Carrick, gives Dr. Oliver linage to: Knights of the Garter, Order of the Crown and The Plantagenet Society. Eleanor was a 11th generation American and a certified Daughter of the American Revolution. Martin W. Oliver Sr., was a 7th generation American.
