Who is Dr. Martin Woodrow Oliver Jr.?
Born on the day World War II ended in Europe, V.E. Day, at a United States Navy Hospital at a submarine base in Wisconsin, Martin W. Oliver Jr. was fortunate to be raised in sunny, warm San Diego, California. Martin is the first-born son of Chief, Martin W. Oliver Sr., a 20 year US Navy Submariner World War II Pacific Theater Veteran, a Bronze Star, Gold Star decorated war hero, deep-sea diver, boxer, private-pilot, chief machinist, and Harley Davidson motorcycle racer originally from Tennessee. His Mother Eleanor Annette Oliver was an English and Home Economics Teacher and Mother of three children, also from Tennessee. Prior to graduation from Grossmont High School El Cajon California, Martin worked in Fletcher Hills and El Cajon California as a home Gardner, a ride-the-bicycle paper-boy (125 customers), a neighborhood construction assistant, and a bus-boy at a La Mesa, California restaurant. After graduating from Grossmont High School in La Mesa where Martin played 3 years of defensive end first-string football, Martin spent one year of "pain, suffering and sleepiness" at Grossmont College, while working simultaneously as a clothing salesman at Bill Gambel's Men Clothing (formally in La Mesa, California).
Oliver then went on to work for Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego, first as a part's orderer and part's pick-up man and then as a Crew Member/Assistant Bolson's Mate/Painter/Deck-Swabee/Cook on the research ship F.L.I.P (Oceanographic Floating Instrument Platform). A diligent worker by God-given nature, you could always find him on the job except when he got time off to surf the beautiful waves of La Jolla, California... or to just walk the white sandy San Diego beaches enjoying the sun!
With an acceleration of the Vietnam War, Martin was about to be drafted into the US Army and instead in 1966 joined the United States Air Force. The morning Oliver left his home to join the Air Force, his Army draft notice followed him, arriving in the afternoon mail. He was technically trained in intelligence at Kessler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi as a morse code intercept operator. Dr. Oliver served the United States Air Force honorably for 6 years (4 years active, 2 years in reserve), principally at a secret Air Nautical Chart and Information Squadron at Hickam AFB, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, which made top secret bombing flight maps for US pilots in Vietnam.
After discharge, Doc Oliver moved to Monterey, California and put his nose to the grindstone accumulating 96 semester units with studies at Monterey Peninsula College in oceanography, chemistry, physics, astronomy, math and biology. Oliver fully intended to go back to work for Scripps Institute of Oceanography and become an Oceanographer, which of course, just happened to be located at his favorite surfing beach, La Jolla Shores, California. Now you can see how he thinks!
Much to everyone's surprise, 2 years later, Martin saw the "light" and heard the "call" of God on his life. With the new enlightened viewpoint he transferred to Holy Word Bible School AKA Bible University and then enrolled in Bible Theological Seminary both formally located in Monterey, California. When the dust finally settled over Oliver’s education, he had completed a BA, MA, and PhD in Industrial Organizational and Clinical Psychology, Marketing/Sales and Theology. He also received his ministerial ordination through Apostolic Ministries Inc., in 1977. During his education Oliver simultaneously worked in business and construction under the guidance of Pastor Mel Westbrook, at the Monterey First Assembly of God Family Christian Center Church. The Church later changed names and became the Church of Monterey. Oliver served as the Assistant Evangelist to the Church from 1972-1976 and then became the Director of Evangelism from 1976-1989. Finally Dr. Oliver served as Co-Pastor to the Church of Monterey from 1989-1991.
Since 1978 Martin has been a Management Consultant at his own company, Dr. Oliver’s Consultations. To date, Martin served 76 clients and companies in 38 industries in positions such as:
